Competitions

Roughly every month or so the club will stage a competition where members submit pictures upon a particular subject.

A guest judge, typically from another club will appraise each picture so that everybody present can learn from a good picture well taken & presented, or pick up hints & ideas  which are equally as useful.

These are often very light hearted evenings, many of the judges are old friends and they will round the evening off by  awarding merit certificates to the best pictures or slides.

There are often trophies to be won, and there is a running league for those members that take these competitions a little more seriously.

League Competition Principles

Classes

To make things fair to all, there are two classes,

  • Standard - which is aimed at the fairly new to experienced photographer

  • Advanced- which is aimed at the almost professional or very experienced photographer, with access to expensive cameras & computer equipment

Submissions

Images can be submitted as prints mounted on card, slides and enprints (typically unframed 6"x4" prints straight from the developers envelope)

The images will be placed on an illuminated stand at the front for all to view and allow the judge to impart his thoughts & ideas,
(this isnt as painfull as it sounds, and as far as we know Jeremy Clarkson isn't a photographer !)

To make the evening entertaining for all we would ask each person attending to try & enter 3 slides and/or 3 prints and/or 3 enprint. Your name & the title of the image should be on the reverse side of the print/slide which makes it easy to allocate scores

Prints (apart from enprints) should be mounted on card/mounting board. Maximum size 20"x16" Slides should be "spotted" ( and I haven't a clue what that means !)

Presentation & Marking

Typically photographs are presented in the following order

  1. Enprints

  2. Standard Class Prints

  3. Advanced Class Prints

  4. Standard Class Slides

  5. Advanced Class Slides

The  external judge assigns marks out of 10 for each picture and these will be added to your cumulative league total for the year

This year  there are a total of four Rounds, one on a fixed subject & the Highest cumulative score wins shield in each class

Standard Class winners each year are automatically promoted to the Advanced Class the following year

Club Trophies

To incentivise each competition the club has a series of trophies donated by distinguished members from previous years that are presented to the winner of that particular evening. These are often associated with a particular subject
